10. Cookies and Similar Technologies

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to store on your device. We use two kinds: a small number the site cannot work without, and optional analytics and advertising cookies that we set only if you agree to them.

When you first visit, a banner asks you to choose. Nothing optional is set before you answer — the site loads Google’s tag in a denied state, so no analytics or advertising cookie is written to your device until you accept. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page.

Cookies we set without asking. These are strictly necessary to deliver the site, so they do not require your consent:

• __cf_bm — set by Cloudflare, which serves this site, to tell human visitors from automated traffic. Expires after about 30 minutes.
• sesar-consent — records the cookie choice you made. It is kept in your browser’s local storage rather than as a cookie, is never sent to our server, and stays on your device until you change your choice or clear your browsing data.
• WordPress session cookies — set only if you sign in to the site as an administrator. Ordinary visitors are never issued one.

Analytics cookies, only if you accept. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: which pages are read, how people arrive, and where they give up. We use it in aggregate and do not use it to identify individuals.

• _ga — distinguishes one visitor from another. Expires after 2 years.
• _ga_PQH4H1R4VP — keeps the state of your visit so one session is not counted twice. Expires after 2 years.

Advertising cookies, only if you accept. We advertise on Google and on Facebook and Instagram. These let us see which advert led to an enquiry or a free trial, so we are not paying for advertising that does not work, and let us show our adverts to people who have visited the site before.

• _gcl_au — Google Ads conversion linking. Expires after 90 days.
• _fbp — the Meta pixel, used by Facebook and Instagram to attribute an enquiry to the advert that led to it and to build advertising audiences. Expires after 90 days.

If you refuse. The site works exactly the same and nothing is withheld. Google’s tag stays loaded but stores nothing on your device; it sends anonymous, cookieless signals that give us rough totals without recognising you or following you between visits. The Meta pixel stops entirely — it records nothing at all unless you accept.

Who receives this information. Analytics and Google advertising data is processed by Google Ireland Limited and Google LLC. Advertising data from the Meta pixel is processed by Meta Platforms Ireland Limited. Both may transfer it outside the UK, including to the United States, under the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and their standard contractual clauses. How Google uses data from sites that use its services is described at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and Meta’s cookie policy is at facebook.com/policies/cookies. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertising networks beyond the two described here.

Our lawful basis. For analytics and advertising cookies we rely on your consent, under regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and Article 6(1)(a) of the UK GDPR. You can withdraw that consent at any time, as easily as you gave it, using the Cookie settings link in the footer. Strictly necessary cookies are set under regulation 6(4), which does not require consent.

Controlling cookies in your browser. Separately from our banner, every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, usually under Settings and then Privacy. Blocking all cookies may stop parts of some websites working, though this site will continue to function. The Information Commissioner’s Office explains your rights at ico.org.uk.
